A joint public-private effort culminated in the recent opening of the Golden Square and Golden Villas, two affordable housing complexes in Pompano Beach.

The Housing Authority of Pompano Beach worked with representatives from Pinnacle Housing Group for four years to create 302 affordable housing units in the city's west area, just north of Hammondville Road.

"Unfortunately, there are people who can't afford homes, and this provides quality living quarters well within their budget," said Mayor Lamar Fisher.

The projects fill a need in the community, said Jimmie Glenn, chairman of the housing authority. One of the community buildings is named after him.

"This is probably one of the most important things to have in a community," Glenn said.

Efforts to secure financing for the $49 million project through various housing tax credits and county housing program funds began in 2006. Permits were finalized in February 2008, and residents started occupying the buildings in June, three months ahead of schedule.

"I've never seen a plan come together so smoothly," said Ralph Adderly, executive director of the Housing Authority of Pompano Beach. "We finished early and under budget."

Units range from 702 to 1,494 square feet and come with full amenities. Rents begin at $742 for a one-bedroom apartment and go up to $1,155 for a four-bedroom unit. Some units have also been set aside for very-low-income households, ranging from $341 to $534 a month.

"It's not only beautiful, it's affordable," said Latonia Thomas, a new resident and single parent at the complex. "My kids love it, and I couldn't pick a better place to live. We have a pool!"

Resident Vivian Stubbs said she is grateful to be able to move her family out of a one-bedroom home into a three-bedroom apartment that's affordable.

"My son has his own space," Stubbs said.

Units are still available. For more information, call 954-933-4050.
